Lab-grown diamonds?

Lab-grown diamonds are often marketed as the more sustainable alternative to natural diamonds, but what does it mean in terms of GHG Emissions?

A typical lab-grown diamond produced using Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVP) follows the value chain shown above. Looking at this, we can see that whilst emissions may be lower than for mined diamonds, they continue to be significant. Raw material extraction (natural gas and coal), diamond synthesis, and cutting and polishing all have high emission factors, and this should not be ignored when considering the sustainability qualifications of a lab-grown diamond.
